The prosecutor's office has requested a criminal trial in the case of rape committed by actor Gerard Depardieu, the AFP agency reported on Thursday. The accusations against the actor are made by actress Charlotte Arnould.

The French film star was questioned in the case on December 16, 2020, after Charlotte Arnould accused him of rape, which he allegedly committed twice, on August 7 and 13, 2018, in his Paris residence. It is up to the judge to decide whether the trial will take place.

The actor's lawyer has not yet responded to AFP journalists' questions about the case.

As the actress's lawyer, Carine Durrieu-Diebolt, explained, “this motion is the result of a long investigation.” “The materials collected confirmed the veracity of my client's version of events,” she added.

The lawyer also said that for Arnould “it is a great step forward and at the same time a surge of hope as we await the judge's decision.”

Numerous accusations against Depardieu

The sexual assault cases of one of the most famous French actors are not limited to France. IN Spain Journalist and writer Ruth Baza accused him of rape, which he allegedly committed in 1995.

Although at least 20 women have accused the star of sexual aggression, in 2023 Depardieu, now over 70, published an open letter in Le Figaro in which he wrote: “I have never, ever hurt a woman.”

Depardieu was arrested in April in connection with accusations of sexual assaults on two women during the production of films – the AFP agency reported at the time. The prosecutor's office issued a statement in which it said that he had received “a summons to appear at a hearing before a criminal court (…), in connection with sexual assaults that may have taken place in September 2021 and involved two victims.”

The actor, who denies the allegations, was questioned and later released from custody. He is due to appear in court in October.
