Several dozen people protested in front of the headquarters of the Polish Press Agency, and several Law and Justice MPs are staying inside the building as part of the parliamentary intervention. Its new boss, Marek Błoński, has still not been allowed into the PAP president’s office. He announced that it is necessary to quickly put the work of the editorial office “on the right track” – he pointed out the need to conduct an audit and analyze the validity of the operation of products launched by PAP in recent years.
Several dozen people protested in front of the headquarters of the Polish Press Agency on Thursday evening, and Law and Justice politicians were inside the building. The situation was observed by TVN24 reporter Michał Gołębiowski.
The reporter reported that Jan Kanthak left the PAP building around 11 p.m. Anita Czerwińska was also visible.
The new head of PAP, Marek Błoński, could not enter his office because he was blocked by politicians.
Łukasz Schreiber, in a conversation with Michał Gołębiowski, a TVN24 reporter, argued that politicians PIS they are in the PAP building to “defend the constitutional order in Poland.” The politician said that Poles see that “illegal actions are being carried out on the basis of the Sejm resolution.”
– While conducting the parliamentary intervention, I saw the minutes of the supervisory board from the general meeting of shareholders, and in the minutes it is clearly recorded that all the actions that were taken and the introduction of these neo-authorities, these usurpers who are sitting here with an army of lawyers, were taken solely on the basis of a resolution of the Sejm – added.
Błoński: we do not act on the basis of a resolution of the Sejm
Marek Błoński, appointed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz as the president of PAP, emphasized that “it operates on the basis of achieving the goals that have been set, and these are goals related primarily to restoring the proper implementation of the Agency’s public mission.”
– If I heard that the message had to be reversed, because it was “their way” and now it was supposed to be “our way”, I wouldn’t be able to continue such a conversation at all. I have not heard anything like that from the minister and I accept it in good faith and assume that this is the goal of this entire operation in all public media companies – he said.
He emphasized that it would be necessary to put the editorial office’s work “on the right track” very quickly. – The point is to make sure that these standards are maintained. Ultimately, these standards will need to be refreshed, he added.
He reminded that the “PAP Vademecum” – a document with substantive rules of journalistic work at the Agency – is almost 20 years old and therefore needs updating, including: when it comes to sources of information and social media acceptable for a PAP journalist.
Błoński emphasized that it will be necessary to conduct an audit and analyze the validity of the operation of products launched by PAP in recent years, such as The First News platform. He noted that “we will certainly not act in such a way that we will now close everything or liquidate what was there.”
– The same rule applies to journalists. It doesn’t matter who came from where, but what competences they have and how they work – he mentioned. – The beginning of January will probably be the moment when the ordering will have a defined framework. It’s like when admitting patients to the Emergency Department, there is a triage of who needs help first and who needs help later, he explained.
He informed that he still does not have access to the PAP president’s office, but this does not prevent him from carrying out management activities. – I have often heard from MPs that we are acting on the basis of a resolution of the Sejm. That’s not true. We were not appointed on the basis of a resolution of the Sejm, he noted. – The owner appointed the council, the council appointed the management board. The fact that the president’s office is occupied does not prevent management activities and they are being performed, he added.
