PSL Senator Jan Filip Libicki referred to his entry in social media on Tuesday, in which he wrote that the activities of journalist Tomasz Terlikowski “makes him tempted” to “stop dealing with” victims of pedophilia in the Church. – If it is the case that people hurt by the crimes of pedophilia felt affected by my entry, I sincerely apologize to them, and I ask all other Twitter participants to read my post carefully – said Libicki.
Senator of the Polish People’s Party, Jan Filip Libicki posted on Twitter on Sundayin which he referred to the activity of journalist Tomasz Terlikowski on topics related to pedophilia in the Church. “The fervor with which the editor @tterlikowski puts every victim of pedophilia in the center in the center gives me – he admits that it is bad – the temptation to stop caring about them so much. For now, I am fighting this temptation effectively, but I don’t know how long …. @nowePSL ” – we read in Libicki’s entry (original spelling).
Senator Jan Filip Libicki was a guest of the morning conversation on RMF FM on Tuesday. – No, I’m not crazy – he said, referring to the content of the post he posted. He added that he would like to present “his intentions”. He noted that he called the “temptation” he wrote about “bad” and that “for now he is successfully fighting it.”
– No, it’s not true – he replied when asked why he did not want to care about the victims of pedophilia crimes. This was a reply to Mr [Tomasza – przyp. red.] Terlikowski, who claimed that crimes of pedophilia took place in every seminary, in every assembly, in every parish, he said. – I know many seminaries, many assemblies, many parishes where such situations did not occur – he added.
“Each of us knows someone who has been hurt, in every parish, in every community, in every order and congregation, in every seminary, they are sexually abused. Discovering that they are at the center of the Church changes thinking. There is no going back to what was “- reads Tomasz Terlikowski’s entry, to which the senator referred.
– The fact that they are there does not mean that they were harmed there – said the broadcaster after quoting Terlikowski’s post on Twitter. – First of all, I believe that what Mr. Tomasz Terlikowski writes is untrue – said Libicki. – Secondly, if we start saying that something was happening everywhere, we weaken the social sensitivity to those cases when the crime of pedophilia actually happened – he added.
The senator also said he admitted he was wrong. – Did I make a mistake? Yes, I made a mistake – said Libicki. He pointed out that the mistake is that as a politician “he should think not only about his own intention, which he wanted to say, but how its presentation on Twitter will be received.”
At the end, Libicki apologized to the victims of pedophilia “affected” by the entry, and asked the rest to “read carefully”. “It was not my intention, in any way, to minimize the pain and suffering of victims of pedophilia,” he said. – Victims of the crime of pedophilia, who may have felt offended or touched by my entry, although it was not my intention, I apologize on reflection – he said.
Zgorzelski on Libicki’s entry: an unacceptable statement
The deputy speaker of the Sejm Piotr Zgorzelski from the Polish People’s Party referred to the entry of the PSL senator in “Rozmowie Piaseckiego” on Tuesday. He said it was “unacceptable.”
Zgorzelski pointed out that “the spokesman of the Polish People’s Party, on behalf of PSL and the Polish Coalition club, completely dissociated himself from these words, condemned them, apologized.” He also assessed, referring to the content of Libicki’s Twitter entry, that “a rather intricate logical construction does not hold together, because it primarily affects the victim, and victims should not be used in any way to discuss the views of some journalist.”
On Sunday evening, PSL spokesman Miłosz Motyka referred to the senator’s statement. “As @nowePSL, we strongly dissociate ourselves from Senator @jflibicki’s entry. This tweet in no way reflects the opinion of our group. We apologize,” the spokesman for the Peasant Party wrote.
Libicki: I’m not worried about PSL’s lack of support in the Senate elections
The host of the broadcast on RMF radio suggested that the senator was “disciplined” on Twitter by the PSL spokesman, Miłosz Motyka, who stated that the group dissociated itself from Libicki’s entry. – Are there matters in which Jan Filip Libicki would be disciplined? asked the senator.
He also noted that the tweet that caused such controversy would not be deleted. He also referred to the possibility of withdrawing support for him by Polish People’s Party in the upcoming Senate elections. – I am not afraid of such a thing and I am convinced that PSL will make a reasonable decision in this matter – he said.
– If it is the case that people harmed by the crimes of pedophilia felt affected by my entry, I sincerely apologize to them, and I ask all other Twitter participants to carefully read my post – PSL Senator Jan Filip Libicki noted.
Emotions around Libicki’s entry
On Sunday, Jan Filip Libicki’s entry was answered by Tomasz Terlikowski, called by him to the board. “He asks for this fervor Pope Francisit comes from the Gospel. But to understand it, you have to meet the wronged, see the scale of the phenomenon (not only in the Church), get out of the comfort zone. I encourage you to do it because it is an experience of conversion,” wrote the journalist (original spelling).
Libicki’s entry aroused great emotions, the tweet has over 1,400 responses and has been viewed over half a million times. Among the people who commented on the PSL senator’s entry was, among others, Błażej Kmieciak, the outgoing chairman of the state pedophilia commission.
“Senator @jflibicki with your sensitivity and experience, such words?! Christ Lord, this is not possible! This is how the injured / undead are supposed to be in the CENTER, they, not curia, purples and purples are the Church, and hurting them is a real profanation of the One who created this Church” – wrote Kmieciak.
Jan Filip Libicki explains
Libicki then explained in a blog entry on the Salon24 portal that his tweet referred to Tomasz Terlikowski’s Saturday entry. “We all know someone who has been hurt, in every parish, in every community, in every order and congregation, in every seminary, they are sexually abused. Discovering that they are at the center of the Church changes thinking. There is no going back to what was,” wrote Terlikowski on Saturday.
The PSL senator justified his Sunday entry on Twitter by saying that he believed the journalist’s statement to be untrue. “Moreover, I believe that formulating such opinions dulls the public’s sensitivity to those cases of church pedophilia that actually took place. And that’s what my tweet was about,” said Libicki.
Terlikowski announced on Sunday evening that he did not intend to back down from his words. “Nowhere did I write (…) that in every parish, convent, seminar someone was sexually harmed. I wrote that in each of these places THEY ARE sexually harmed. And I added, because it is obvious that they were harmed not only in the Church. And this is not my invention, it is pure statistics, “wrote the journalist in the explanation he posted on social media.
