A major media law, the assumptions for this law are ready (…), will appear in the first half of this year – announced on Thursday Bogdan Zdrojewski, MP of the Civic Coalition and head of the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Media.
Bogdan Zdrojewski, MP of the Civic Coalition and head of the Parliamentary Committee for Culture and Media, was a guest of Radio Zet on Thursday. – A large media law, the assumptions for this law are ready. (…) 2024 – this is the time when it will come into force. It will appear in the first half of this year, he announced. As he added, it will be “more in March-April than in June-July.”
He noted that the ruling coalition fears that “the president will not be particularly willing to sign it.” However, the MP expressed hope that the president would want to talk about such a project.
Zdrojewski was also asked about the act on the liquidation of the National Media Council. – Generally, it’s ready – he replied. As he said, “it is even in the Sejm ‘freezer'” because “Marshal Witek put it there.” The former Minister of Culture admitted that some of the assumptions of the act were subject to discussion in 2023. – They were discussed among journalists, producers, television and film producers. In principle, it is ready, says Bogdan Zdrojewski.
Zdrojewski: Public Television will be decided by professionals and journalists
When asked whether the TVP INFO station would change its name, he replied: – I think so. As he said, the current name is associated with “vulgar, aggressive propaganda, it creates bad associations.” – This brand should be replaced with a more neutral one – he said, adding that this issue has not been decided yet. – The time in which Bogdan Zdrojewski, as the head of the culture commission, or the head of this or that party, decides what Public Television will look like is coming to an end. The decisions will be made by experts and journalists, and public opinion polls will be conducted – declared the Civic Platform politician.
Referring to the cooperation of the ruling camp with President Andrzej Duda in the matter of public media, he said that in this matter “we have no guarantee for anything.” – The president was repeatedly dissatisfied with the media, he expressed it, he was in a dispute with (former TVP president – ed.) Jacek Kurski, but Kaczyński tapped his foot and everything returned to “normal” – he said. He stressed that he did not expect “anything constructive from the president and his office.” – I expect various decisions that will be a source of turbulence for the government – he added.
Public media in liquidation
On Tuesday, December 19, the Sejm adopted a resolution on the restoration of legal order and the impartiality and reliability of the public media and the Polish Press Agency. The Ministry of Culture announced in Wednesday’s announcement that the head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, referring to the Commercial Companies Code, dismissed the current presidents of the management boards of Telewizja Polska, Polskie Radio and Polish Press Agency and their supervisory boards on December 19 this year.
The current presidents of public media protested against the changes being introduced, and PiS MPs, as part of parliamentary interventions, occupied the offices of public media from Wednesday, December 20, including: TVP, PR and PAP.
Minister of Culture and National Heritage Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz announced on Wednesday, December 27, that due to the president’s decision to suspend financing of public media, he decided to put TVP, Polskie Radio and PAP into liquidation.
