The International Criminal Court on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he accuses of war crimes involving the unlawful deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia. – The whole world looks at Russia differently. This is the first time in my life that Putin has no apologists in the west, it’s all gone. Nobody is on Putin’s side, commented Professor Norman Davies, historian and expert on the history of Central and Eastern Europe, in “Fakty po Faktach”.

International Criminal Court (MTK) issued on Friday warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The judges found that there are real grounds to believe that Putin is responsible for war crimes involving the unlawful deportation of children from occupied territories Ukraine to Russia. At the same time, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for the Russian ombudsman for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, accused of the same crimes as Putin.

The guest of “Fakty po Faktach” was professor Norman Davies, a historian and an expert in the history of Central and Eastern Europe. He referred, inter alia, to the decision of the ICC.

Davies: The Russians can hand over Putin themselves

“Of course I didn’t expect it,” Norman Davies said when asked if he imagined the International Criminal Court would issue an arrest warrant Vladimir Putin. He added that for many years there was no possibility of punishing criminals at the head of various states, such a chance appeared with the establishment of the International Criminal Court almost thirty years ago.

As the guest of “Fakty po Faktach” said, if years ago the Serbs themselves handed over to the Hague Tribunal the Serbian criminal Slobodan Milosevic, there is a chance that the Russians will do the same in relation to their president. “Nobody expected that, and the Serbs themselves handed Milošević over to the Tribunal,” emphasized Professor Davies.

Slobodan Milošević was considered by the West to be the main perpetrator of the wars in the Balkans in the 1990s, he was arrested in Serbia in 2001. He was then handed over to the Hague Tribunal for War Crimes in Former Yugoslavia. Milošević was tried there in a trial for genocide and crimes against humanity. He died in custody in The Hague in 2006 before his sentence was announced.

The guest of “Fakty po Faktach” also commented on the geopolitical situation Russiaalso in the context of armed aggression against Ukraine. He pointed out that Russia was expanding its territories until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and “Putin is right that it was [upadek ZSRR, dla Rosji – red.] the greatest catastrophe.” He added that although the Russian president undertook to rebuild the empire, “it must end with Putin’s defeat.”

The historian also said that in the 1990s the Russian Federation was threatened with “complete disintegration” and “Putin stopped it.” – He returned to the ideology not of the USSR, but of Tsarist Russia. They do not recognize the existence of the Ukrainian nation, they want to bypass the entire 20th century,’ said Professor Davies

Davies: Putin no longer has apologists in the west

According to the professor, the perception of Russia as a state has also changed thanks to the arrest warrant for Putin. – The whole world looks at Russia differently. This is the first time in my life that Putin has no apologists in the West, (…) it all went quiet. Nobody is on Putin’s side – assessed the guest of “Fakty po Faktach”. He also added that he “doubts if the Chinese are happy with what he is doing” and that China could be a threat to Russia in the future.

Professor Davies also said on TVN24 that Poland can be a historical example for Ukraine that gives it hope. – Poland has survived the successive invasions of Russia, Ukrainians see that this country is standing and is not lonely, it has allies. This gives Ukraine hope that one day it will be in a similar situation, he added.

Davies on the Russian military: it sucks

He also admitted that the scale of aid for the defending Ukraine is incomparably greater than the aid for Poland, which in 1939 was defending itself against the attack of Nazi Germany. – In 1939, the British guarantee for Poland was sterile – assessed Norman Davies, describing the position of Great Britain at the beginning of World War II. – Now NATO is much stronger than Russia. Russia is much weaker. This Russian army is useless, he concluded.
