Qatar and the United Arab Emirates restore diplomatic relations. The embassies in Doha and Abu Dhabi have reopened, Qatar’s foreign ministry said.

Embassies Qatar and the United Arab Emirates were reopened on Monday to strengthen cooperation since the two Gulf states agreed to restore diplomatic relations, the Qatari Foreign Ministry said.

The re-establishment of ties comes as part of a broader regional push for reconciliation and more than two years after Arab states ended a boycott that led to the breaking up of a Western-allied bloc of Arab states in the Persian Gulf.

The State Department welcomed the information about the resumption of diplomatic relations USA. The event was described as an “important step” in promoting stability in the region.

Karatu’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the two foreign ministers, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, had a telephone conversation as both embassies reopened.

Struggle for influence

Abu Dhabi and Doha have been in fierce competition for years for regional influence, arguing over the role of Islam in politics and support for pro-democracy movements in the Middle East.

In 2017, in connection with accusations of supporting terrorism and strengthening ties with Iran – Saudi Arabia, United Arab EmiratesBahraim and Egypt cut all ties with Qatar.

In 2021, Riyadh and Cairo became the first to re-appoint ambassadors to Doha after Saudi Arabia entered into an agreement that ended the dispute. Bahrain, on the other hand, has still not opened its embassy in Doha.
