Curator Nowak threatens with a youth book. The author replies to the readers: “You are enough”
There are already hundreds of books about LGBTQ+ youth on the Polish market. And although the curator Barbara Nowak scares the parents of their young readers with depravity, it is unlikely to change the trends. This wave cannot be stopped. Young people want to read about queer heroes because they want to read about themselves – we hear in publishing houses and from teenagers. And subsequent titles break sales records.
Those who think that the times of censoring books for children and teenagers are over – when some priests, as well as some parents and teachers encouraged them to hide them from the eyes of innocent and defenseless children, would be wrong.
Many of you may remember that even the adventures of Harry Potter did not have an easy life (not only in Poland). Even 20 years after the first release! After all, in the spring of 2019, after the Sunday mass, priests, altar boys and faithful from the parish of Our Lady Mother of the Church and Saint Catherine of Sweden in Gdańsk simply burned books about Potter. They were in a pile of “magic items” somewhere along with Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, Indian figurines, and Hello Kitty’s pink umbrella.
Magic and “occultism” have been censored in children’s and teenage literature for years.
Now the enemy is slowly becoming the LGBTQ+ community. And even state officials, such as the Malopolska education superintendent, Barbara Nowak, are starting to take part in the war against literature.
It was she who wrote on her Twitter on May 5 (original spelling): “Today, one of Krakow’s mothers called me indignant, because in the city library, primary school students were recommended the book “Lesbijki poradnik po polkackiej” (Lesbijki’s Guide to Catholic School). Depravation of children in places where they should feel safe #ChrońmyDzieciWspierajmyRodziców “.
More than 100,000 people saw her post.
The hashtag used by Nowak is the slogan of the civic committee that is collecting signatures for a bill that makes it difficult, among other things, to conducting sex education classes. Officially: protect against sexualization, although this means something completely different than what she used to say, e.g. Nowak. “Civic” mainly by name, because the initiator of the action is formally a councilwoman PIS from Stalowa Wola, and signatures are collected in party offices throughout the country.
But today, not about the sexual fixations of the right wing, but about books.
What outraged the curator Nowak, what part of the book did she find coarse and did she read the book at all? We will not know this from the official, because until the publication of this text, she did not answer our questions. However, Nowak already has experience in reviewing works of culture that he does not know, such as theater performances, as was the case a few years ago with “Dziady” staged in Krakow. We will also not know whether the curator has intervened in connection with the “phone call from mom”. Although it is actually hard to imagine, after all, public libraries are not subject to the curator (she thundered about this), but only school libraries. However, there is no doubt that Nowak has repeatedly attacked the LGBTQ + community in the past, and what she could find “depraving” was probably the very word “lesbian”.
It is certain that Nowak did not even give the correct title of the book she attacked, because it is actually “A guide (not a guide – ed.) Lesbians to Catholic school”. It was published in Poland for the first time in 2022, the novel is written by Sonora Reyes (translated by Dominik Górka).
We decided to read the book, contact the publishing house, and at the same time tell why Polish youth are crazy about LGBTQ+ books. Because if you take a look at the bestseller lists with us, you will see that this is exactly what happened.
And curator Nowak, no matter how hard she tries, has little chance to stop this phenomenon. Why?
