Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski met with his German equivalent Johann Wadephul. The bosses of diplomacy referred, among others, to the victory of Karol Nawrocki in the presidential election.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on Wednesday in Berlin talked with his German equivalent Johann Wadephul about European security and further support of Ukraine. Diplomats also took part in the opening ceremony of the Polish-German Forum at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Berlin. At a joint conference of the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a comment was asked to election for president Polish Karol Nawrocki. Sikorski emphasized that the fact of winning the opposition candidate is the best proof of democracy in Poland. “Democracy is not discussed, the voice of voters is God's voice,” he said.

He also indicated that in Poland – as in Germany – The president is not the head of government. – The president in Poland is a representative of Poland abroad, implements a policy appointed by the Council of Ministers – he noted. He added that foreign policy is formulated by the Council of Ministers “and this will not change.”

How will Poland support Ukraine now?

Referring to the question of the impact of the choice of Poles on the relations and support of Ukraine, taking into account Nawrocki's opposition in the matter of joining to NATOSikorski recalled the words of President Andrzej Duda and said that “the world looks a little different from the perspective of the Presidential Office, and from the perspective of a candidate for such an office.”

– Our opposition today has a tradition of supporting Ukraine – he reminded. He emphasized that the president also Lech Kaczyński In Ukrainian matters he spoke “the language of national consent”. He expressed the hope that “the new PiS president” would continue to Ukraine the line of presidents Lech Kaczyński and Andrzej Duda.

– Poland and Germany have a special role to play in the field of Eastern Flanka's safety and support for Ukraine. This is our common historical responsibility and test for our cooperation – emphasized Sikorski.

German head of diplomacy: We want to continue Polish-German friendship

Wadephul, in turn, emphasized that the cooperation of Germany and Poland is strict and strong, that there is no doubt that all common plans for the future and arms projects will be implemented. He reminded that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier “offered President Elek a cooperation based on friendship.” He noted that this also applies to the federal government.

– We know that democratic elections were held in Poland and we know that Poles and Germans are friends. We want to continue it – he noted.

“Polish moment in Europe”

– When we talk about the ability to defend, we finally talk about what we protect: our freedom, our values, our democracy. And this also belongs, as the foundation of our cooperation, also a joint memory – said Wadephul.

He declared that the Germans would never forget about Polish Nazi victims, and a permanent monument will be devoted to them with the Polish-German House.

– It is as “The Economist” recently wrote – a Polish moment in Europe. I will say that this is our common moment – for Germany, for Poland, for a strong, able to defend Europe – said the head of German diplomacy.

Referring to the issue of compensation for Polish victims of war and occupation, Sikorski emphasized that Polish society did not forget about the harm of German aggression in 1939. “There are still those among us whose fate has marked the stigma of this war,” said the minister.

He noted that Polish expectations for compensation for the victims of World War II “remain current” and – as he added – talked about it with his German counterpart. He stipulated that this topic “is not part of the current policy, but an expression of a deeply rooted need for memory, justice and recognition of the suffering that left a lasting trace in Polish families.”
