Radosław Sikorski in Munich: Donald Trump's phone to Vladimir Putin was a mistake

Sikorski, referring during the panel at the Munich Safety Conference to the Friday statement of US Vice President JD Vance about threats to Europe, emphasized that “in Poland we have no doubt that the threat to Europe, liberal democracy and decency comes from Putin's Russia.”

Vance said that Russia or China is not the biggest threat to Europe, but the threat from the inside, the retreat of Europe from some of the most basic values.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs estimated that President Donald Trump's phone to Vladimir Putin was a mistake because it works in favor of the Kremlin and weakens morale in Ukraine.

According to Sikorski, we are dealing with a crisis, which is the result of the fact that Europe “used the dividend of peace for too long.”

The head of Polish diplomacy also announced that French President Emmanuel Macron invited European leaders to Paris on Sunday to talk about the situation.

Sikorski estimated that “the credibility of the US, not only Donald Trump's administration, depends on” how the war in Ukraine will end. “

– If Putin manages to subordinate Ukraine, it will be a signal for China that he can recover what he considers a rebellious province. This would have direct consequences for the US strategy and the alliance system and – possible – for the future of Taiwan – he continued, asked about what Trump would say.

The head of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs Annalej Baerbock, answering the same question, stated, among other things, that Trump should listen to Poland and not repeat Germany's error, which did not listen to Warsaw's warnings accurately about the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

During the panel at the Munich Safety Conference, Sikorski also referred to a security guarantee for Ukraine. He noted that “Ukraine already has guarantees (safety) that turned out to be empty.” He reminded that Kyiv got rid of nuclear arsenal in exchange for security guarantees. He estimated that in international relations “there is nothing more dangerous than an empty warranty.” “If we want to give a guarantee, we must take it seriously,” he added.

The German Minister of Foreign Affairs said that “this is the existential moment in which Europe must be created.” – Three years ago, when everyone, especially the President of Russia, also underestimated Europe, (…) We showed our answer: that Europe must be strong and brave. Three years later, today we are again at exactly the same moment. Our answer is united Europe – she said.

She added that “there will be no peace in Europe, if this is not a European room.”

– We will stand alongside Ukraine as long as we should, because we will always be in favor of a European room – she assured.

She also said that currently the biggest threat to Europe is Putinian Russia.

She also noted that Russia has a hybrid war against Europe, the effects of which can be observed during electoral processes, also in Germany. She added that the support of the German extreme right is included in the Russian strategy.

The British Foreign Minister David Lamma said that he would encourage the presidents of Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zełnski to deepen their partnership in the future.

Lammy expressed the opinion that the best guarantee of security for Ukraine before Russia's aggression is the involvement of American industry, business and defense skills. “It will make Putin be careful,” he added.

The British Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that currently 23 NATO countries are spending over 2 percent of GDP on defense. He emphasized: “We all know that it needs to be increased.”

“The United Kingdom absolutely undertakes to 2.5 percent and we will enter this path within a few months,” he declared.
