– Poland needs a better school – argued the president of the Polish People’s Party, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, during the program speech. In his opinion, the curriculum is poorly constructed and does not fit the modern world.

President’s speech PSL took place on Saturday in Radziemice (Mazowieckie Voivodeship) at the Primary School. Edward Kleszczyński. Kosiniak-Kamysz indicated financing, teachers’ salaries and work organization as the main problems of education.

He assessed that the curriculum is “not adapted to the needs of the modern world”. – We have gone through the Internet evolution, today you do not have to go to the library to find the answer to many questions, you can find it on the Internet. But is what our children find true? How to separate the false from the true? This is the most important mission of the school today, and the school, I have a feeling, does not teach this today – he said.

He added that “this is the fault of a poorly constructed program that has not undergone transformations related to digitization and access to the Internet.”

Changing the rules of financing

The head of the PSL emphasized that the program should also be adapted to the requirements of the labor market, teaching cooperation, the basics of law, a healthy lifestyle, and economics. He declared that the school should be free of any politics and ideology. – The school must be full of ideas, not any ideology. Friendly, open, with respect for tradition, history, our identity, culture and Polish language, thinking about the future – he said.

Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the principles of financing education should also change. – Subsidy must be 100 percent cover salaries for teachers – he stressed, noting that such regulations were prepared. – The subsidy should also cover activities related to pre-school education – he added. At the same time, he declared that his party supports raising teachers’ salaries according to the law proposed by Polish Teachers’ Union and, should it come to power, it will implement it.

– The quality of education is also preparing students for life in the modern world, it cannot be done without a good knowledge of English. That is why we will introduce a revolutionary change: we will increase the number of hours of English to five per week from the first class,’ he announced. – This is worth spending time and money on. This is very important, otherwise our children will be excluded from the international community – he assessed.

A dentist for every student

PSL’s proposals also include increasing students’ access to dental care. – We realize that it is not possible to create a dental office in every school. But you can do something else – enroll every school in a dentist’s office, so that there will be a dentist in every school – said Kosiniak-Kamysz.

As he pointed out, the fundamental issue in the school reform is “parent’s trust in the teacher and the state’s trust in the teacher”. – The reform of education must be based on trust in the teacher, respect for his work, dignity of work, ethos, but above all, the trust of parents and students in the teacher – he said.

Education accounts for a quarter of the commune’s budget

The mayor of the commune, Marek Słowiński, who was present at the meeting, pointed out that expenditure on education accounts for nearly a quarter of the expenditure from the budget of his commune. – Funds due to the educational subsidy are sufficient for only 60 percent. financing of education expenditures, i.e. 40 percent. we have to provide from the municipal budget to close the entire education budget. Income for education from subsidies is getting smaller and smaller, he assessed.

Katarzyna Mitka, headmistress of a rural school from the Krzeszowice commune, said that the gap between municipal, large and private schools and schools financed by poorer local governments is getting deeper and deeper. – I believe that the transfer of funds from the state budget for the functioning, including the maintenance of buildings and infrastructure, is very important – she said.

She also said staff salaries were an issue. – I have been looking for a psychologist since last year, I still have a vacancy, because even students of the last years of psychology, after presenting what working conditions I can offer them, are not interested, they do not want to take up a job – she admitted.
