In the southern part of Poland, the highest level warnings issued by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management related to heavy rainfall are in force. – We see increased activity and interest of Poles in insuring their property – representatives of insurance companies admit. At the same time, they remind: when buying policies, you need to pay attention to the grace period.
IMGW has issued hydrological warnings for Poland. In the southern part of the country, third-degree, highest warnings are in effect against floods exceeding alarm levels. Alarms have been announced for most catchments in the provinces: Małopolskie, Śląskie, Opolskie, Dolnośląskie and for the southern ends of the Wielkopolskie province.
There is no reason to predict events on a scale that would pose a threat to the entire country; local flooding or so-called flash floods can be expected; there is no reason to panic, there is a reason to be fully mobilized – the Prime Minister said in WrocÅ‚aw on Friday Donald Tusk.
Insurance and waiting period
We asked insurance companies if they were seeing an increase in inquiries about new policies.
Ilona Zaremba-Choim, director of the home insurance office at TUiR WARTA, said that “alarming weather forecasts or RCB alerts informing about intense, torrential rainfall usually increase interest in home insurance”.
– This is also the case this time. However, we would like to point out that the so-called grace period is standard in this type of insurance, i.e. no liability for damages resulting from flooding in the first period after concluding a new contract. In Warta's home insurance, such a grace period is 30 days. This grace period does not apply to clients who renew or continue their insurance – explained the director.
Justyna Szafraniec, PR director at Generali TU, also addressed this topic. As she emphasized in correspondence with tvn24.pl, the company usually observes greater interest in home or car insurance when something is already happening.
– Nothing stirs the imagination like a roof blown off a neighbor's house by strong wind. We are also now seeing increased activity and interest from Poles in insuring their property – she said.
– This enthusiasm decreases after some time has passed since the unpleasant event or the weather stabilizes. However, we still encourage you to protect yourself against sudden and unexpected events in advance – she added.
