A moose with a car tire on its antlers. The photo was taken in the Stawy Raszyńskie nature reserve near Warsaw by a nature photographer. The animal could not be saved on Tuesday evening. Firefighters are to search for it on Wednesday morning.
The information was sent to Contact24 Mrs. Małgorzata. The author of the photos explained that she took them on Tuesday just before sunset. – I live in Warsaw, but I take pictures of nature, so I go to the reserve quite often. Today, about half an hour before sunset, on an island in the middle of the pond I noticed a moose standing there with a car tire on its antlers – she reported on Tuesday evening.
“She won't fall easily”
Our reader initially thought the tire was only momentarily caught on the antlers, but the moose’s movements did not cause it to fall off.
– I saw the moose lower its head several times, I'm not sure if it was trying to throw off the tire or drink, but it was obvious that it wouldn't fall off easily. I called the emergency number 112 and after a while the fire brigade arrived. It was already starting to get dark and the animal hid in the bushes deep in the island and for a moment you could still see part of its head, but soon it completely disappeared from view – she described.
The woman explained that the firefighters contacted a local wildlife expert. “The gentleman said on the phone that there was nothing more that could be done today, and that the moose would probably go to sleep soon, so it would be best to leave it now, and he was supposed to come back tomorrow morning and check if it was still there, if it had managed to get the tire off, and if not, then take further steps. So we left it there, and I also plan to come back to the reserve tomorrow around 8 a.m. to make sure what the situation was. The moose might try to get out of there. The pond isn't deep and moose can swim, but in this situation it's definitely difficult for him to move. He might manage to get it off by rubbing against the trees, but it's hard for me to say whether he has a chance of doing that on his own,” she admitted.
Firefighters will search for moose
We asked cadet Michał Składnowski, press officer of the District Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Pruszków, about the incident. – I can confirm that we received a report that a moose was spotted in the reserve with an element on its antlers that did not belong to it. One unit of the Volunteer Fire Department in Falenty was dispatched to the scene – he said.
– Unfortunately, after reaching the site, it was not possible to locate the animal, and there were no sounds that could indicate that the moose was in immediate danger, therefore – due to the night time – it was decided that tomorrow morning the firefighters would go to the indicated area again to search for the animal – he assured.
