This year, as many as 101 kidneys were transplanted at the University Hospital in Krakow. This is much more than in previous years. A record was also broken across the country. There are no complete data for December yet, but it is already known that doctors transplanted more kidneys last year than in all of 2023.

Both doctors and patients celebrate at the University Hospital in Krakow. As many as 101 kidneys were transplanted there this year. This is much more than in previous years.

– We are talking about 101 transplants, this is a number of transplants comparable to the best Western centers, this is a really large number of transplants, taking into account the situation, how often there are situations where these transplants do not take place – points out Marcin JÄ™drychowski, director of the University Hospital in Krakow.

Among the lucky people who received a new kidney in Krakow this year is Mrs. Katarzyna Doroszuk. – On December 19 this year, I will celebrate my second birthday, because then I received a transplant, which means a new life, without dialysis, without restrictions – says the patient.

And dialysis is a huge limitation in life, as you know, including Mr. Maciej, who is currently waiting for a kidney transplant. This year, the most kidneys – apart from Krakow – were transplanted by centers in Katowice, PoznaÅ„, GdaÅ„sk and Warsaw – two hospitals in the capital and clinical hospitals – over 200 kidneys. This is twice as much as in Krakow. In both cases, these are very good results.

– The result of over a hundred transplants this year shows that we are among the few most important transplant centers in Poland – emphasizes Prof. Piotr Richter from the University Hospital in Krakow.

A record also for the entire country

A record was also broken throughout the country. There are no complete data for December yet, but it is already known that doctors transplanted more kidneys last year than in all of 2023. These are primarily kidney transplants from deceased donors – there are still few kidney transplants from living, related donors.

– About 1-2 percent in our center, generally in Poland about 50 out of 1,250 are performed today, within a year, these are percentages – points out Bogdan Niekowal from the University Hospital in Krakow.

There are more transplants from deceased donors because the eligibility criteria for transplantation have improved. More organs simply go to patients.

Mrs. Katarzyna, who has already had a transplant, can now plan trips, which was previously almost impossible because of the need for dialysis. – I'm terribly happy, I can't wait, but I feel so good here, I already said yesterday during my visit that I feel like I'm on vacation here, everyone is so nice and comforting, like a vacation in a five-star hotel – says Mrs. Katarzyna.
