Recruitment for studies 2023/24. Up to 32 candidates per seat. The most popular majors at Polish universities

The most popular field of study at the most popular Polish universities is psychology. Almost everywhere where it is on offer, more than 10 candidates competed for one place in last year’s recruitment. There was also a lot of interest in Asia-related destinations, e.g. Korean and Japanese studies.

The record-breaking popularity of psychology is indicated by data from eight universities, which are among the most popular in Poland: University of Warsaw, University of Wrocław, Jagiellonian University, University of Łódź, Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Szczecin, University of Silesia, University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań and the University of Gdańsk. Taking into account the recruitment statistics from the academic year 2022/23, psychology has the largest number of candidates per place. Our list includes full-time, first-cycle and uniform studies.

Psychology is the most popular major

The most popular major in Poland is psychology at the University of Wrocław. The data available on the website for recruitment in the academic year 2022/23 show that there were 32.4 candidates for one place. Korean studies were also very popular, with 28.1 times more applicants than available places. Exactly 19.4 people fought for each place on the image communication.

The decisive advantage of psychology over other fields of study in terms of the number of candidates per place can also be seen in last year’s recruitment data of the Krakow Jagiellonian University. There were 20.6 applicants for each place in this direction. More than ten candidates for a place were also recorded in Japanese studies (15.6) and English philology (11.7).

Psychology was also the most popular major University of Lodz. More than 16 candidates competed for one seat. Forensic biology (over 11 candidates per place), as well as management and English philology (in both cases over 10 candidates per place) were also very popular.

On Lublin Maria Skłodowska-Curie University there was also no shortage of people willing to study psychology (8.7 people per place), but some faculties were even more crowded. At the very top of the classification was applied linguistics, the English-Spanish profile (17.4). In second place was another profile in the same field of study, English with German (12.1). More than 10 applicants for one place also applied for criminology (11.7) and biology, specialty: medical biology (10.6).

On University of Warsaw while the largest number of candidates applied for Korean studies during last year’s recruitment. As many as 26.3 people competed for one place in this field of study. Second in this classification was Japanese studies (15.1 people per place), third – English philology (14.7). More than 10 people competed for one place also in sinology, psychology and the art of writing.

What did they choose in Katowice, Poznań and Gdańsk?

Katowice University of Silesia offers several majors usually associated with film schools, and it was them that enjoyed the greatest interest in last year’s recruitment. 17.2 candidates applied for one place in the direction of film, television and photography. There were 13.2 applicants for a place at the director’s office. The podium was completed by psychology (10.7 candidates per place), slightly ahead of English philology with the specialization of culture-media-translation (10).

For the title of the most popular direction on University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań, psychology (17.6 people per place) and Korean studies (16.9) competed. A two-digit number of candidates per place also applied for management and business law (13.8), Norwegian philology (12.6) and Japanese studies (11.6).

On page of the University of Gdańsk there is no data on last year’s recruitment, so we rely on recruitment statistics from two years ago. They show that the most popular field of study at the largest Tri-City university is computer science (15.4 people per place). Criminology was ranked second (14.2), and English Philology (12.4) was ranked third.

The most crowded Polish universities

At the end of October, MEiN published results of recruitment for studies for the academic year 2022/2023 at the universities supervised by them. They showed that the most besieged public university in Poland was the Warsaw University of Technology, and the non-public one – the WSB University in Poznań. The most popular field of study was computer science.
