Senator Marek Borowski spoke in “Fakty po Faktach” about the situation of migrants. He argued that any action in this matter must be “based on humanitarianism”. He recalled the recent words of Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz, noting that “he rarely quotes church hierarchs”.
The guest of the Saturday issue of “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 was senator, former prime minister and former Speaker of the Sejm, Marek Borowski. He was asked, inter alia, about the return of migrants – including children who are several years old – from the border, and about keeping journalists from entering the zone of emergency.
– The idea that if you do not allow journalists and if you hide what is happening there, no one will find out about it, is a sick idea. Rather, sooner than later, everyone will know about it anyway – he replied.
The spokeswoman for the Podlasie Border Guard, Katarzyna Zdanowicz, this week explained that the procedures applied to migrants are “in accordance with the government regulation”. Borowski replied that “this regulation is inconsistent with the Convention on Human Rights.” “You mustn’t do that,” he pointed out.
– I am aware that the situation we are dealing with is absolutely unusual. We don’t have a natural refugee movement here. Of course, they are also like that. I think that political refugees, for example from Iran and Afghanistan, are among those who show up there at the border. But most of them are indeed economic immigrants, ‘he continued.
He mentioned that “there is an open airline, if not from Baghdad, then from Istanbul and then to Poland”. – There, these hundreds or even thousands (of people) come. Therefore, we cannot accept all who come forward, place them in centers for foreigners, and then carry out long asylum procedures, especially since Lukashenka (Belarusian president, Alyaksandr) does not accept them back. Hence, if this asylum procedure would not work, what to do with them? – He was asking. “That’s one side of the coin,” he added.
– Therefore, betting on the border is justified in my opinion, it must be done. On the other hand, however, if someone finds himself in our territory, especially families with children, there is no help – he continued. He mentioned that “pushing them back into the forest” results in “Belarusians won’t accept them, and they’ll stay there, on concrete.” “This is unacceptable,” he said.
Borowski explained that in such a situation a solution must be found that “must be based on humanitarianism”.
– I very rarely quote church hierarchs, but recently Cardinal (Kazimierz) Nycz put it in one sentence, probably very rightly. He said there is no contradiction between border defense and the humanitarian, human, and Christian aid to which we are committed. And this is how it should look like – he concluded.
We have the right and the duty to defend the borders of Europe, but between defending the borders that no one is questioning and humanitarian aid and human, Christian aid, to which we are obliged by the words of the Gospel – there must be no contradiction
“It’s a cynical game”
The program also mentioned the politicians who appeared at the border, near Usnarz Górny, even before the entry into force of the state of emergency. The deputies, as well as the deputy speaker of the Senate, wanted to provide them with food and medicines. There were voices from the government that these were “happenings on the border”.
Borowski said that the deputies “appeared there out of a heart reflex.” – It was used cynically by PiS politicians. They are shown as those who do not understand the situation – he assessed. – This is a cynical game to convince Poles that their life, health and safety are at risk. This is not true, he said.
