We all pay for the removal of the effects of what happened. And it’s huge money. The state pays, we pay, because these wastes, these landfills, if they are liquidated, they are liquidated with public money – said Wojciech Bojanowski, co-author of the report “Red waters”, on the liquidation of landfills on TVN24. He also calculated the cost of their disposal.

There are over 400 illegal landfills in Poland, where criminals left life and health-threatening waste. The mechanism is repetitive: a plot or hall is rented for the pole, waste is transported there, and then – as prosecutor Konrad Rogowski informs – “it simply disappears”. The problem is faced by the owner of the plot or hall, who usually cannot afford to take away the waste and dispose of it. As TVN24 journalists Olga Orzechowska, Filip Folczak and Wojciech Bojanowski found out, the waste includes the so-called red water, which is produced during the production of TNT. This waste was discovered by reporters and investigators in several illegal landfills. TNT in Poland is produced by one factory: Nitro-Chem from Bydgoszcz.

Wojciech Bojanowski told TVN24 about the costs of liquidating landfills. – We all pay for the removal of the effects of what happened. And it’s huge money. The state pays, we pay, because these wastes, these landfills, if they are liquidated, they are liquidated with public money. Because either it is the National Fund for Environmental Protection or it is communal money, in any case money from our taxes – he said.

– Someone earned tens, if not hundreds of millions of zlotys, and now we all pay for it – he added.

Bojanowski about the costs of waste disposal

The co-author of the report “Red waters” indicated the cost waste disposal. – Disposal of one such tank, which we had recently in the studio, a tank containing a thousand liters of chemicals, today is PLN 12,000. All you have to do is multiply the PLN 12,000 by the number of these tanks. It is very simple, let’s take the largest landfill in Rogowiec and multiply. 12,000 times 50,000, there are such tanks, 50,000, please, that’s PLN 600 million – the TVN24 journalist calculated.

– One landfill is the largest in Poland, its disposal will cost PLN 600 million – he noted.

It exploded on Saturday fire in the hall in Przylepa in Zielona Góra, where dangerous substances were stored. – Zielona Góra, a matter we’ve been talking about since Saturday, there are about seven thousand such containers. (…) Quick math says that these are millions more zlotys – he added.
