Residents of a luxury apartment complex in the Chilean seaside resort of Vina del Mar live in fear. They are afraid that their houses will collapse after a 30-meter-deep hole opened up at the foot of one of the blocks after heavy rain. The building hung just above the precipice.

More than a week ago, a landslide occurred in the city of Vina Del Mar, located on the Pacific Ocean in the Valparaiso region, resulting in a luxury apartment building on the edge of a cliff. The sinkhole is 15 meters wide and 30 meters deep.

Since then, 87 residents have been evacuated.

– We go to bed in fear. The first night we didn't sleep at all. We only thought about what might happen, said Clara Curinao, a resident of one of the buildings in the neighborhood, in an interview with Reuters news agency journalists.

Local media report that the causes of the sinkhole are being investigated. Experts point to various reasons for this incident, including the collapse of an underground water collector due to heavy rainfall.

Experts also note the unstable ground where the landslide occurred. Local media recall that in August last year, a sinkhole near the same apartment complex meant that residents of one of the buildings could not leave their homes for many months. A month later, a similar situation affected residents of another building in the area.
