Taking political considerations into account, Belarus is endangering the lives and welfare of immigrants gathered on the border, stressed the members of the Security Council in the resolution adopted on Thursday – European Union countries, the USA, Great Britain, and Albania, which will soon become a non-permanent member of the Security Council. Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polanski, accused the authors of the resolution of “masochistic tendencies”.

– They have some masochistic tendencies, because it is very bold to raise this topic before us, which is a complete shame for the EU, said Dmitry Polanski, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, before the start of Thursday’s debate in the Security Council.

The Russian diplomat added that the West is responsible for the situation in the countries where it intended to introduce democracy. In his opinion, the result is another wave of refugees. As Reuters emphasizes, the diplomat denied when asked whether Russia or Belarus helped transfer migrants to the Polish border. “No, absolutely not,” he said. At the same time, he argued that not all problems have to be solved by the Security Council.

The discussion on the situation on the border with Belarus during the UN Security Council meeting was held at the request of France, Estonia and Ireland – with the support of Norway, the USA, Great Britain and Albania.

Resolution of the members of the UNSC on the situation on the border with Belarus

In the resolution adopted on Thursday, the members of the European Union sitting on the Security Council, the USA, the United Kingdom, and Albania, which will soon become a non-permanent member of the Security Council, emphasized that Belarus, guided by political considerations, endangered the lives and welfare of immigrants gathered on the border.

The content of the statement on Twitter was published, among others, by the permanent representative of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations in New York, Krzysztof Szczerski. “A strong statement after the UN Security Council,” he commented. The content of the document was read out by Estonia’s Permanent Representative to the UNSC, Sven Jurgenson.

“We call on the Belarusian authorities to put an end to these inhumane activities and not to endanger people. International organizations must be given immediate and unhindered access to migrants so that they can provide them with humanitarian aid,” the document reads.

The authors of the resolution condemning Belarus show solidarity with Poland and Lithuania. The countries they represent are ready to start a debate on how to support Poland and Lithuania. At the same time, they consider it advisable to introduce sanctions against those who support the actions of the Belarusian regime and facilitate the illegal border crossing with the European Union.

“We remain united and determined to defend the EU against hybrid attacks by the Belarusian authorities. (…) We express our deep concern about the terrible situation of immigrants and call on the Belarusian authorities to ensure their access to adequate protection and care,” the document states.

The resolution calls for action to avert a humanitarian crisis and to ensure that people who do not have a legal basis to stay in Europe can safely return to their countries.
