Syrian authorities quickly disciplined Wagner Group militants in the country during the rebellion of its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, Reuters reported. The mercenaries had their phones and internet cut off so they couldn’t contact their colleagues and commanders in Russia, and then were told to sign new contracts.

Reuters, citing sources in Syria and the region – reported that already on the night of June 23, when the rebellion of the Wagner Group began, mercenaries stationed in Syria were cut off from contacting anyone in Russia.

The commanders of the mercenary troops were summoned to a Russian military base, and their subordinates were ordered to sign new contracts with the Russian defense ministry or leave Syria quickly.

According to an officer of the Syrian Republican Guard, high-ranking commanders of the Syrian armed forces and intelligence officials feared that the Prigozhin coup would prompt the Kremlin to recall a contingent stationed in Syria to Russia, which was an important support for the government forces there.
