Last night in some places in Poland you could see the Northern Lights. Glows in shades of green and pink were captured in the photos of photographer Marek Stan near Rewa (Pomeranian Voivodeship). See how beautiful this phenomenon was.

The night from Sunday to Monday brought us cloudy weather, but in some places we could count on clearings. Thanks to this, some lucky people – such as photographer Marek Stan – had the opportunity to see an unusual phenomenon, not very typical for our latitude. In the north of the country, there are conditions suitable for admiring the Northern Lights.

The photos taken by Mr. Marek were taken in Rewa (Pomeranian Voivodeship). The phenomenon was truly unusual – it shimmered with green and pink shades. The author of the photo also managed to capture the starry sky.

Northern lights – what is it and how is it formed?

The aurora borealis is formed in the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere and is a phenomenon characteristic mainly of the polar regions. It can take many different forms: colorful arcs, streaks, bands. Auroras are also generally green, blue-green with patches of pink or red, there are also blue-white, yellow-green or purple colors.

Their formation is associated with the flow of current in the ionosphere, at an altitude of about 100 kilometers above the Earth. During solar flares, the Sun emits protons and electrons. These particles are mostly deflected by the Earth’s magnetic field. They are caught by the Earth’s magnetosphere and move along the helix path along the magnetic field lines connecting the two Earth’s magnetic poles. As a consequence, there is an excitation of atoms in the polar region, which results in the appearance of luminous glows in the sky.
