As a result of heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers, the Rio Branco in northwestern Brazil was flooded. The flood caused thousands of people to leave their homes, many of them have nothing to return to.

The last days of March brought exceptionally heavy rainfall to northwestern Brazil. The downpours affected the water level in many reservoirs. Water flooded, among others, the city of Rio Branco. As the streets turned into rivers, residents were forced to use canoes and boats to navigate them.

Residential areas are visible in the drone photos. Many houses were flooded to the upper floors and even the roofs.

– We are inside the camp, with more than a thousand people who have lost their homes. We hope for a quick resolution to this situation – said pastor and teacher Paul Machado.

Flooding in Rio Branco has left 695 families homeless, according to the Brazilian government news agency. As many as 39 shelters have been created in the region, where victims can receive help.

According to Brazil’s National Meteorological Institute (INMET), more rainfall will reach the region in the coming days thunderstorms.
