This year, drivers will only get 142 kilometers of new motorways and expressways – says the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. Although, as GDDKiA puts it, over 1,180 kilometers of roads are “under construction”, in reality the new routes that will be available this year are much shorter. “Gazeta Wyborcza” reminds that last year the length of the Polish network of expressways (motorways and expressways) exceeded the threshold of 5,000. km.

The newspaper notes that “the formal winter break for the contractors of new roads ended in mid-March and they should now start working hard.” “Some contractors actually resumed work earlier, taking advantage of the exceptionally warm weather this year in February to make up for the backlog or complete some of the work ahead of time,” it says.

“There are fewer authentic construction sites”

As summarized by “GW”, for this year the GDDKiA announced the commissioning of almost 25 km of the A2 motorway, 117 km of new expressways, as well as 23.5 km of national roads in the GP standard (main accelerated ones) and 10 km of city ring roads. This is a total of over 175 km of new national roads.

New sections of national roads S7 (Miechów-Szczepanowice and Widoma-Kraków), S52 are to be commissioned, and, according to the daily, the construction of another section of “zakopianka” – more than 16 km of national road No. 47 from Rabka – should be completed by summer. to Nowy Targ. As announced, the construction of the S3 expressway between Bolków and Kamienna Góra in Lower Silesia is to be completed in mid-year.

According to the daily, “last year the length of the Polish expressway network (motorways and expressways) exceeded the threshold of 5,000 km and is currently 5,117 km.” “However, this is only two thirds of the target network of such roads in Poland. In addition, many sections and routes still need to be built so that the existing motorways and expressways are actually connected into a network connecting the capitals of voivodeships and enabling efficient communication throughout the country” – he points out attention. He adds that “according to the estimates of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA), currently 1,184 km of new motorways, expressways and lower category national roads and 143 km of city ring roads are 'in progress'“. “This is a total of over 1,326 km of national roads. But the term 'under construction' is also used by GDDKiA to describe roads that are only in the design and construction permit stages. There are fewer authentic construction sites. As a consequence, drivers cannot count on a significant number of new routes this year,” we read.
