Reassumption of voting in the Sejm, legal opinions on this matter and the behavior of Marshal Elżbieta Witek – among others, these topics were commented on by Robert Biedroń, MEP of the Left, in TVN24’s “One for One”. – It is not in the interest of society to manipulate, cheat. And Marshal Witek, unfortunately, deceived the society – he assessed.
Last Wednesday, during the session of the Sejm, which adopted, inter alia, the anti-TVN law, there was controversial reassumption voting on a motion to adjourn the meeting. First, the Sejm accepted this motion, but after the break extended several times, the Marshal of the Sejm, Elżbieta Witek, ordered a reassumption of the vote, which was supported by 229 deputies, with one vote against and one abstention. In another vote, the Sejm rejected the motion to adjourn the session.
Marshal Witek, explaining then her decision on the reassumption, said that she “consulted five lawyers” on the subject. On Monday, the Sejm Information Center published these opinions. All five are from April 2018.
Robert Biedroń on reassumption, legal opinions and behavior of Elżbieta Witek
MEP Robert Biedroń spoke about the controversial reassumption and behavior of Marshal Witek on Tuesday in “One for One”.
– We do not have a temple of democracy today, like Europe in the form of the European Parliament. At the head of the Polish parliament, we have a party officer who carries out the will of the party, he said. In his opinion, “this manipulation, not to say: the lie that Marshal Witek made when presenting these expert opinions, will go into the manual on how to serve your master well, who is the party’s president.”
– It’s very sad. For many years and centuries, Polish parliamentarism has been an example for many countries of how to nurture democracy and how to develop democratic values. Today all of this has been wasted for the sake of a party ID – said Biedroń. He stressed that “it is not in the interest of society to manipulate, to cheat”. “And Marshal Witek, unfortunately, deceived the public,” he assessed.
Biedroń: The Polish government, unfortunately, is taking further actions that violate EU law
Biedroń also spoke about the relations of the Polish government with the European Commission in the context of the judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union regarding violations of the rule of law. – The Polish government, unfortunately, is taking further actions that violate EU law, Poland is threatened with further sanctions. We would expect the European Commission to be more active. Today, unfortunately, we do not see this activity. This is not a good signal, he said.
– There are so many crises that today, globally and within the European Union, that the European Commission treats it as one of many problems, which I regret – explained the MEP.
And – as he emphasized – “it is a real problem and if it is not solved, it will spread.” – Others will follow in the footsteps of Kaczyński and Orban. It is important for the Commission to realize what the situation is, he said.
Biedroń: there will be a debate in the European Parliament about lex TVN
The guest of TVN24 added that “one of the foundations of the European Union is the protection of freedom of speech, the freedom of free media operation”.
– That is why, at the beginning of September, the European Parliament will hold a debate on, among other things, at my request lex TVN, media freedom in Poland. It will be an important moment, Parliament will take a position on the serious threat to free media in Poland. There is consent to such a debate, it will take place on September 13 or 14, informed the MEP.
