It was a few minutes before 3 p.m. when the first information about the attack on the head of the Slovak government appeared in the media. – The Prime Minister fell next to the railings. It's a nightmare. It's impossible that this happened in Slovakia, an eyewitness told reporters. – Something has happened that we are not aware of yet. The attack took place in the town of Handlova, after an away government meeting. Slovak media report three gunshot wounds, two in the arm and one in the stomach. Robert Fico was transported by helicopter to Banská Bystrica, 30 kilometers away. The perpetrator, a 71-year-old Slovak citizen, arrived at the scene of the attack in his car, which he parked in front of a nearby supermarket. According to some witnesses, he shouted at the Prime Minister to come towards him and then fired four shots. The man was detained moments after the attack. The police have already initiated proceedings into attempted premeditated murder.
