Attack on the Prime Minister of Slovakia. Robert Fico shot after a government meeting

The first reports about the attack on the Prime Minister of Slovakia appeared in the media just before 3 p.m. As reported, Robert Fico was shot when he approached the crowd gathered in front of the building of the Cultural Center in Handlova. Previously, a meeting of the Slovak government was held there.

– Shortly after 2:30 p.m. we received information on the emergency number about a man shot in Handlowa. To a 59-year-old patient we sent a rescue helicopter. The intervention continues – reported the Emergency Operations Center of the Republic of Slovakia.

A few minutes later, a short statement appeared on the politician's Facebook profile.

“Robert Fico was shot multiple times and he is currently in a life-threatening condition. He is currently being transported by helicopter to Banská Bystrica because it would take too long to get to Bratislava due to the need for urgent surgery. The next few hours will decide” – written.

Robert Fico shot. Who is the Prime Minister of Slovakia?

Robert Fico is a 59-year-old politician born in Topolczany. He obtained his education at the Faculty of Law of the Comenius University in Bratislava.

He became involved in politics in 1987, when he joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. He was elected to the National Council for the first time in 1992. He was re-elected in the subsequent elections in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2012. During this time, he was, among others, a member of the Slovak delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

W In 1999, he decided to establish his own political party, SMER. Seven years later, his party won the parliamentary elections, entering into a coalition between Vladimír Mečiar's L'S-HZDS and Ján Slota's Slovak National Party. On July 4, 2006, he took office as Prime Minister of Slovakia for the first time.

In 2014, Fico tried his hand at the presidential elections. In the first round of voting he received 28 votes, but in the second round he lost to Andrej Kiska.

Robert Fico's party won in the early elections in 2023, and the person concerned was again proposed for the position of prime minister. On October 2, 2023, President Zuzana Čaputová entrusted him with the mission of forming a new government, which was sworn in several days later.
