Delighted with Andrzej Żuławski's cult horror film “Possession” from 1981, he decided to produce its remake. The film will be directed by Parker Finn, the creator of the horror film “Smile”.

It was a big hit at the Cannes festival in 1981, where the lead actress – French star Isabelle Adjani – won the Palme d'Or for best actress, and later also a Cesar Award. Like most of Andrzej Żuławski's works, the painting aroused controversy among critics, and was appreciated only years later.

More than four decades later, Robert Pattinson – the star of “Twilight” and “Batman” – decided to film its remake. He invited the creator of the hit horror film “Smile”, Parker Finn, to direct the picture.

According to information obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, there is a fight for the rights to the project. Talks with interested parties are at an early stage, but THR even writes about a “bidding war” for the remake of the Pole's work.

A horror classic

The action of Andrzej Żuławski's 1981 film, an international French-German co-production, takes place in West Berlin. The Berlin Wall and the inscription “Die Mauer muss weg” – “the wall must disappear” are often shown in the film. The starting point and the dramatic axis of “Possession” is the breakdown of a marriage – the impulse for the plot was the director's divorce from Małgorzata Braunek, which he experienced greatly.

The hero – the spy Mark, played by Sam Neill – quits his job and returns home to his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) and son. Soon, the woman asks him for a divorce and falls into increasingly strange emotional states. Initially, Mark believes that the source of the crisis is his partner's affair with the much older Heinrich (Heinz Bennent), a narcissist in love with esotericism who infected Anna with Eastern philosophy and discovered the sensual side of life. However, it soon turns out that the hero's wife is under the influence of a much stronger power.

Żuławski used the so-called poetics in the film. gore cinema – a type of horror film characterized by scenes with blood, illustrating drastic violence – which at that time was quite an artistic risk and received with mixed feelings. The heroine's husband hires a private detective who discovers that Anna has an intimate relationship with a monster, neither human nor animal, that feeds on the bodies of its victims. The situation becomes even more complicated when he meets a woman who looks very similar to his unfaithful wife. Years later, the picture was appreciated for its “new approach to psychological horror of the supernatural” and gained the status of a cult work.

In an interview several years ago, the late director told me: – On the set, I fought literally with everyone: producers and actors. Adjani didn't want to do sex scenes with the monster for quite a long time. And then it turned out that for the role she won her only Palme d'Or and, on top of that, a Caesar.

Will Pattinson play a cheated on husband?

Parker Finn will not only direct, but also write the script. Robert Pattinson and his company Icki Eneo Arlo are in a luxurious situation: the most important players in the industry are competing for the rights to produce the film. Hollywood and beyond.

Meanwhile, viewers are most interested in the question: will Robert Pattinson decide to play the main male role? The actor himself, who doesn't have a busy calendar at all and will only be on the set of Matt Reeves' sequel to Batman at the end of the year, remains mysteriously silent.

No less interesting is the question of who will play the role of Adjani, which won her the Cesar and the Palme d'Or.
