On December 16, 2022, the operational commander of the types of armed forces, Tomasz Piotrowski, notified Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the duty service of the Minister of Defense about an “unidentified object” in Polish airspace – writes “Rzeczpospolita”. The diary reconstructed the course of events of December 16 on the basis of the documents of the duty service of the Air Operations Center.
At the end of April, a third party found the remains of an “unidentified military facility” in a forest near Bydgoszcz. As it turned out later, these were the remains of a rocket that fell there on December 16, 2022.
May 11 Minister of National Defense Mariusz Blaszczak stated, without answering journalists’ questions, that “procedures and response mechanisms in the case of the object found near Bydgoszcz worked properly up to the level of the operational commander.” He accused the operational commander of the types of armed forces, Lieutenant General Tomasz Piotrowski, of not informing him or the relevant services about the missile that entered Polish airspace.
Mariusz Błaszczak, as well as the Prime Minister Mateusz Morawieckiclaim that they learned about the rocket that fell near Bydgoszcz only when its remains were found.
“Rzeczpospolita” recreated the events of December 16
New light on this matter is shed by the findings of “Rzeczpospolita” published on Thursday. The diary reconstructed the course of events of December 16 on the basis of the documents of the duty service of the Air Operations Center – an ad hoc report made before noon that day and a detailed report at around 2.30 a.m. on the night of December 16/17. These documents were also secured. Supreme Chamber of Control.
The situation took place on the day when the Russians massively shelled the territory Ukraine. “At 8.50 the Ukrainian side informed the duty service of the Air Operations Center of the Operational Command about the attack. Ground radar stations in Poland registered the so-called radar reflection. It disappeared and reappeared” – we read in “Rzeczpospolita”.
As the newspaper writes, Polish radars picked up the object already in Polish airspace. “At that time, General Tomasz Piotrowski, operational commander of the Polish Armed Forces, was in the combined operations center.” “Rzeczpospolita” reported that the image analysis lasted from 8 to 10 minutes.
After that time, “a decision was made to raise the readiness of the air defense located in Jasionka near Rzeszów. At the same time, two pairs of combat aircraft were scrambled” – Polish and American fighters. These planes “were supposed to intercept the object”, but “the pilots did not make eye contact, what’s more – the on-board radar stations did not register the object”. This could have resulted – as Rzeczpospolita points out – from the terrible weather conditions that day.
“Rzeczpospolita”: Prime Minister and Minister of Defense learned about the “unidentified object” on December 16
According to the daily, “the operational commander decided to inform the prime minister about the unidentified object of unknown origin.” He called Morawiecki, but he did not answer the phone. “At that time, he notified the duty service of the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces about it, noting that he was not sure what this object was,” we read. The prime minister called back after several minutes and also found out about the situation – added “Rzeczpospolita”.
“The operational commander also notified the police about the possibility of the fall of the object. However, it was not entirely certain where it fell. The police did not find it. No explosion was recorded, no biological or chemical radiation was found in the country, so it was considered that there was no threat” – added “Rzeczpospolita”.
