The prosecutor’s office filed a complaint with the District Court in Kalisz (Greater Poland Voivodeship) against the lack of arrest for a 19-year-old woman suspected of causing a fatal accident in Rogaszyce at the beginning of October. A 17-year-old boy died in the incident.
The prosecutor submitted a request to the District Court in Ostrzeszów to impose temporary arrest on the woman. The court dismissed the application, stating that detention was not necessary.
The prosecutor did not agree with this and filed a complaint to the District Court in Kalisz. – The prosecutor appealed against the decision of the court in Ostrzeszów and filed an appeal with the Kalisz court in the form of a complaint. The prosecutor presented his argument, pointing to both the risk of a high penalty and the need to conduct further evidence. It is very important to determine the statements made by the people who were in the car, and since these people know each other, failure to arrest could complicate the proceedings. It is primarily about ensuring the proper course of action, said Maciej Meler, spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Ostrów Wielkopolski.
The car burst into flames and a 17-year-old was killed
According to Maciej Meler, spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Ostrów Wielkopolski, the investigators’ findings show that a 19-year-old resident of Ostrzeszów was driving the BMW. The woman did not adjust her speed to the road conditions, lost control of the car and drove onto the right shoulder. The car overturned and then burst into flames.
There were two passengers in the car, apart from the driver. One of them, a 17-year-old resident of the Ostrzeszów commune, died on the spot. The second passenger, a 19-year-old resident of Ostrzeszów, was taken to hospital. The driver of the vehicle was sober.
The speedometer shows over 250 kilometers per hour
As prosecutor Meler told PAP, the woman was driving at a speed of over 250 kilometers per hour just before the accident. – She did not take appropriate precautions and did not properly observe the road situation. She lost traction, drove off to the side of the road, and hit the slope of a roadside ditch. It caused the car to roll over and then catch fire, he said.
The 19-year-old faces up to eight years in prison. The suspect, according to investigators, pleaded guilty and testified that her friends encouraged her to drive fast.
