A strong earthquake was registered in southwestern Romania on Tuesday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said. It had a magnitude of 5.7. The day before, the same area of ​​the country also experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of over 5.

The epicenter of the earthquake on Tuesday afternoon was 56 kilometers northwest of the town of Drobeta-Turnu Severin and about 10 kilometers northwest of Târgu Jiu, the capital of Gorj County.

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the magnitude 5.7 quake occurred at a depth of 40 km, while according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 5.5 quake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

The earth shook at 15.16 local time (14.16 in Poland). Local media report that it was felt in other cities in the country, including the capital Bucharest.

After about 10 minutes, a magnitude 3.4 aftershock was recorded in the same area at a depth of 10 km.

On Monday late afternoon, an earthquake also struck near the city of Târgu Jiu. It had a magnitude of 5.2. It was felt in other major cities in the country as well as in neighboring countries such as Serbia, Bulgaria and Hungary and more distant – in Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.

As described by the residents, they left the buildings in a hurry. The Romanian state services received numerous reports from frightened citizens.

For both quakes, there is no information on property damage or casualties.

Earlier in Romania, the earthquake of November 3 last year in the Vrancea district in the east of the country had a similar force.
