Calin Georgescu appealed against the decision of the Central Electoral Office to reject his candidacy in the presidential election – the Constitutional Court of Romania, who officially registered the appeal, said in a communiqué. The complaint is to be considered on Tuesday.

Calin Georgescu wrote in the conclusion that the Central Electoral Office “has exceeded its rights” and usurps itself “in an unacceptable manner of the court's exclusive rights.”

Georgescu also claims that his candidacy in the May 4 election can under no circumstances be based on the decisions of the Constitutional Court regarding another election trial, namely the presidential election at the end of 2024, which were dismissed – told the Romanian information portal G4media.ro.

Decision of the Central Electoral Office

On Sunday, the Central Electoral Office (BEC) decided to reject the application submitted by Georgescu on Friday to register him as a candidate in the presidential election. Ten people were in favor of such a decision, there were four against.

The refusal to register Georgescu's candidacy is, as G4media.ro writes, the consequence of previous “unprecedented decisions” issued by the Constitutional Court (SK) Romania. On December 6, the Tribunal issued a decision on annulment of the presidential election of November 2024.

Earlier, even at the stage of the first registration of candidates in the presidential election, in October last year, SK crossed out from the list of far -right politician Diana Sosoaka, the pro -Russian leader of the SOS Romania party.

After announcing the decision to reject Georgescu's candidacy on Sunday, in front of the BEC headquarters and in other places in Bucharest there was scuffles and clashes with the police.

Annulled presidential elections

Calin Georgescu in November last year unexpectedly won the first round of presidential elections, which were then annulled by the Constitutional Court. The reason for this decision was given abuse during the campaign and the possible interference of an external actor (Russia).
