The US and Britain have imposed new sanctions against those involved in the attempt to poison Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny. Exactly a year ago, the blogger and critic of the Kremlin lost consciousness on a plane flying from Tomsk to Moscow.
“Today, the UK and the US are taking further action against those directly responsible for the poisoning of Mr. Navalny. Just as we did after Russia used chemical weapons against the UK’s Skripals in March 2018, we continue to stress that it is imperative to be held accountable and punishing those who use chemical weapons, says a joint government statement published by the US State Department.
In March 2018 in Salisbury, England, an attempt was made to poison a former officer of the Russian military intelligence GRU and a double agent cooperating with the United Kingdom Sergei Skripal and his daughters. For this purpose, the chemical combat substance Novichok, designed by scientists in the USSR for military purposes, was used. The British government and many other Western countries blame Russia for the attempted murder, which has rejected the accusations.
An appeal to Russia
On Friday, the United Kingdom announced a foreign asset freeze and travel ban for seven Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officials who were reportedly involved in Navalny’s Novichok poisoning attempt in Siberia exactly one year ago.
Despite the statement, the US has so far not published the details of its sanctions against those involved in the attempt to poison Navalny.
Both countries urged Russia to notify and get rid of its chemical weapons program. They also regretted the lack of a proper investigation into Navalny’s poisoning attempt. “We reiterate our interest in a stable and predictable relationship with Russia, based on full compliance and implementation of international commitments and obligations,” wrote the governments in a statement.
He passed out on board the plane
On August 20, 2021, Alexei Navalny was hospitalized in Omsk, Siberia. The leader of the anti-Kremlin opposition felt bad on board a plane flying from Tomsk to Moscow and lost consciousness. The machine has emergency landed in Omsk. At the request of the family, the activist was transported to the Charite clinic in Berlin a few days later, where he was examined and treated.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons confirmed that a substance belonging to the group of noviczok was used against Navalny. The opposition activist believes that the attack on his life is the Russian secret services acting on the personal order of the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
