Associates of famous Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny have not had contact with him for almost three weeks. On Monday, his spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh announced that “he is in a penal colony in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in northern Russia.” “He is in one of the northernmost and remote penal colonies” in Russia, said Navalny’s close associate Ivan Zhdanov.
“We found Alexei Navalny. He is in penal colony No. 3 in the town of Charp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. A lawyer saw him today. Alexei is fine,” wrote a spokeswoman on the X website.
“It’s in one of the most northern and remote penal colonies” in Russia – added Ivan Zhdanov, a close associate of Navalny.
It was not connected to the hearing
In recent weeks, Navalny was not connected to the hearing, which was conducted remotely via video link. Lawyers were also not allowed to approach the oppositionist. Earlier, Navalny fainted in the labor camp and was given a drip.
Navalny, who in recent years organized thousands of demonstrations against the Russian authorities, was arrested in January 2021 after returning to Russia from German, where he was undergoing treatment after an attempted poisoning. The Russian authorities brought further criminal cases against him, resulting in a total of over 30 years of imprisonment
