Renowned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny is battling an unknown illness in prison, believed to be the result of a slow-acting poison, an opposition spokeswoman told Reuters. Navalny’s defenders claim that the employees of the penal colony do not collect parcels with medicines sent by his mother from the post office.

– He doesn’t eat anything. He is not allowed to receive food parcels or buy food from the prison shop, and the food the prison provides him with actually causes severe stomach pain, Kira Jarmysh, a spokeswoman for Alexei Navalny, told Reuters.

Jarmysz also informed that on Friday an ambulance was called to Navalny because he had a lot of stomach pain, which – as she confessed – was a huge surprise to her, because the oppositionist had never experienced anything like this before.

“Spring and Exacerbations”

On Tuesday, Navalny’s lawyer, Vadim Kobziev, tweeted that on the night of April 7-8, an ambulance was called to Navalny “due to a stomach illness that worsened after his subsequent stay in solitary confinement.”

The lawyer said that the oppositionist suffers from “an unknown disease for which no one treats him.” He reported that the doctors of the penal colony where the oppositionist is serving his sentence, to his question “what’s wrong with him”, answer that “it’s spring, so everyone has exacerbations”.

“Looking at the glaring and very strange situation around Navalny’s health, with bouts of symptoms that never happened, we do not rule out that he is simply poisoned so that his health does not deteriorate rapidly, but gradually and inevitably. For someone else, it may be sound like nonsense and paranoia, but not for Navalny after the ‘novichok’ (poisonous chemical substance – ed.). We will demand toxicological and radiological tests,” wrote Kobziew. His entries were quoted by independent Russian media, including the Meduza portal.

Kobziev also said that Navalny’s mother sends him packages with medicines, but the employees of the penal colony do not collect them from the post office and they are “sent back” to her.

46 years old Alexei Navalny is one of the most recognizable Russian oppositionists. He is serving a nine-year prison sentence for alleged embezzlement and contempt of court. His lawyers say the lawsuits against him are politically motivated.
