The Russian prosecutor’s office has brought new charges against the imprisoned oppositionist Alexei Navalny, this time based on an article about vandalism. He announced this on social media through his colleagues.

Navalny, 47, is currently serving a sentence of over 30 years in prison, including for: for “extremism”.

“I don’t know whether to describe the latest news as sad, funny or absurd,” Navalny said, expressing the opinion that the new allegations are part of the Kremlin’s desire to “open a new case against me every three months.”

Navalny, who organized thousands of demonstrations against the Russian authorities in recent years, was arrested in January 2021 after returning to Russia from Germany, where he was undergoing treatment after an attempted poisoning.

According to the politician, the attempt on his life was organized by the Russian secret services.

More allegations

In February 2021, the court suspended his former prison sentence for alleged financial embezzlement. In March 2022, the oppositionist received another sentence – nine years in a maximum-security penal colony based on accusations of embezzlement and contempt of court. Two months later, Navalny was charged in another case regarding “creating an extremist organization”, while in October, the list of charges was added to, among others, “promoting terrorism” and “rehabilitating Nazism”.

On August 4, a Russian court found the oppositionist guilty of alleged “extremist activities” and sentenced him to 19 years in prison.
