The convicted opposition activist Alexei Navalny, serving his sentence in a penal colony, was again targeted by the Russian authorities. The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a new case against the Kremlin’s most famous critic and associates. The allegations concern the “establishment of an extremist organization” and participation in it.
Alexei Navalny and two of his close associates, Ivan Zhdanov and Leonid Volkov, were investigated into the formation of an extremist organization. Several other people, including lawyer Lyubov Sobol, are involved in proceedings to participate in such an organization.
According to the Investigative Committee, Navalny created an extremist group no later than in 2014, the aim of his “extremist activity” was to “change the foundations of the constitutional system in the Russian Federation, destabilize social security and territorial integrity” of the country.
Shaping “beliefs” in society
The aim of the organization, according to Russian investigators, was also to discredit the authorities, to form the belief in society that it was necessary to change power by force, and to organize “protests that turned into mass riots”.
“To this end, in the period from 2014 to 2021, the heads and participants of the extremist group systematically held public assemblies on the territory of the subjects of the Russian Federation not agreed with the authorities. man and the citizen. Purpose of the established organizations
Investigators maintain that Navalny and his supporters have established eight NGOs to fund their activities. In order to “promote criminal activity” on the Internet, they created the websites of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, Navalny’s staff, YouTube channels and profiles on social networks, the Investigative Committee claims.
Navalny is serving a prison sentence in a penal colony for alleged financial fraud. In February this year, it turned out that another criminal case was initiated against him, Żdanów and Wołków, concerning the establishment of a social organization threatening the rights of citizens. Volkov and Zhdanov left Russia earlier and are living abroad.
