Vasilieva specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic eye diseases. The BBC recalled that the doctor met Navalny a few years ago, while working at a private clinic in Chaika in Moscow. The opposition activist then needed the help of an ophthalmologist after an incident that happened at the end of April 2017, when an unknown perpetrator poured a disinfectant in Russia called green grass in front of the office of the Foundation for Combating Corruption in Moscow. The substance got into the right eye.

Vasiliev is the ninth person among Navalny’s associates who was sentenced after the demonstrations in Moscow in January. Investigators believe that opposition activists called on people to participate in protests without the permission of the authorities and thus encouraged them to break sanitary regulations. Among the inmates is the spokeswoman for Navalny, Kira Jarmysz and his brother, Oleg Navalny.

In September this year, Vasilyeva announced that she no longer wanted to be associated with the Foundation for Combating Corruption Navalny (recognized by the authorities as an extremist organization). She accused Navalny’s associates of having acted “instrumentally” towards the Alliance of Physicians established by her, which once supported the foundation. “They are now in Europe, while others are in prison. Do you feel the difference? Anyone who believed in (the foundation) is now facing criminal prosecution. And when people go to prison, no one will remember them,” Vasiliev wrote on Facebook. Two of Navalny’s close associates are currently staying abroad – Ivan Zhdanov and Leonid Volkov.

The Physicians Alliance is currently struggling with criminal cases against this organization.
