Former Russian Deputy Defense Minister General Gennady Żydko, who served as the commander of the grouping of Russian troops in Ukraine from May to July 2022, died on Wednesday in Moscow at the age of 58, the Ukrainska Pravda portal reported after Russian media and representatives of the local authorities.

According to Kremlin officials, General Gennady Żydka died after a long illness, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

In 2016, Żydko headed the staff of the Russian army group in Syria, and two years later he took the position of commander of the Eastern Military District. From 2021, he was Deputy Minister of Defence. He was dismissed from this position at the end of July 2022. At the same time, he also ceased to command the invasion force Russia in Ukraine. Then, until October last year, Żydko again took over the Eastern Military District, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

Another case of sudden death among the people of the Russian army
