Russia has canceled this year’s edition of the International Aerospace Expo (MAKS), which is part of a number of problems faced by the sector, the British Ministry of Defense said. The first reports of the cancellation of the event appeared in the Russian media at the end of May.

The MAKS fair was to be held in July at the airport in the city of Zhukovsky in the Moscow region. The organizers of the event on Friday confirmed that it had been postponed to 2024, The Moscow Times reported.

The British Ministry of Defense said in an intelligence update that the fair, held near Moscow, is a showcase of the Russian civil and military aerospace sector and has become key to attracting export customers.

The MAKS fair has been held continuously every two years since 1993. The Moscow Times noted that this was the first time the event had been cancelled.

The British Ministry of Defense assessed that the fair was probably canceled due to real security concerns after recent drone attacks on the territory Russiaand it is very likely that the organizers were also aware of the potential reputational damage if fewer foreign delegations attended.

Added that war in Ukraine turned out to be a unique challenge for the Russian aerospace sector. The industry is grappling with the effects of international sanctions, highly trained professionals are encouraged to serve in the Russian space agency’s Roskosmos militia, and the commander of Russia’s aerospace forces, General Sergei Surovikin, has not been seen in public since the failed mutiny of the Wagner Group, for which he served as a contact point in the Ministry of Defence.
