US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby assessed that the partnership between Russia and China is a marriage of convenience, not an alliance. He also commented on fragments of the joint statement by the leaders of these countries, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, on respect for the UN Charter.

– I would like to note that both sides have just said that “the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter must be respected”. Well, we agree with that. Compliance with the Charter would mean that Russia should withdraw its forces from the territory Ukraineanother member UN – said the spokesman for the US National Security Council John Kirby in the White House, commenting on the joint statement signed by Putin and Xi on Tuesday on deepening cooperation.

As the spokesman added, if indeed – as they wrote Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping – they wanted “to stop all steps that lead to the escalation of tensions and prolongation of the conflict”, Russia could withdraw its forces, or at least “stop bombing hospitals and schools”, or take children out of Ukraine en masse.

Russia – China. A marriage of convenience, not an alliance

Kirby estimated that China cannot be considered an impartial observer of the conflict, as they have never condemned the aggression and continue to support Russia, although they have not yet decided to send it deadly weapons. He added that nothing he had heard from Putin and Xi suggested that the end of Russian aggression was imminent.

At the same time, the spokesman described the relationship of the two countries as a “marriage of convenience”, not an alliance, and added that Russia is the weaker partner in it. He stated that while Xi sees Putin as a “counterbalance to American influence” in Europe and around the world, Putin sees Xi as a “potential ally.”

– It is Putin who does not have many friends in the international arena. They can be counted on the fingers of one hand, so he needs the support of President Xi, because he is running out of resources, he is running out of soldiers, his army is constantly being compromised. He needs help from President Xi and that’s what this visit is all about. And whether it will bring any results, we will see – said the representative of the White House.

Asked about the US administration’s estimates of ammunition consumption and Russian losses, Kirby estimated that Russia had used thousands of rockets and millions of rounds of artillery rounds, and probably lost more than 100,000 troops, including dead and wounded. At the same time, he noted that Russia receives support from Iran and North Korea, which will probably continue.
