On the night from Friday to Saturday, the Russian tanker SIG was damaged near the Crimean Bridge in the Kerch Strait. Moscow claims it was attacked by a Ukrainian drone. The head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) did not comment on this specific incident, but recalled that similar special operations “are conducted in the territorial waters of Ukraine” and “are completely legal”.
The inhabitants of the occupied Russia Crimean authorities reported explosions that could be heard near the Crimean Bridge connecting the peninsula with mainland Russia, the AP agency reported. Reuters, citing Russian authorities, reported that the Russian oil tanker SIG was damaged in the night from Friday to Saturday as a result of a sea drone attack in the waters of the Black Sea.
The ship was attacked near the Kerch Strait connecting the Russian-occupied Crimea with Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, the Moscow Times reported.
Traffic on the bridge was blocked for several hours
“The ship’s machinery compartment near the waterline was damaged, possibly as a result of a sea drone attack. There were no casualties,” the Reuters agency reported, citing the Russian Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport.
On a vessel that sailed from Turkey, there was an explosion, but no fuel leaked from it, the Moscow Times wrote. It added that the attack on the tanker blocked traffic on the strategic Crimean Bridge over the Strait for about three hours, and the ship itself is secured by two tugboats.
There were 11 crew members on the SIG, some of them suffered minor injuries from broken glass, the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reported.
The SIG tanker previously transported jet fuel to Syriasupplying the Russian troops stationed there, for which he was placed on the US sanctions list – reminded the “Moscow Times”.
Media: The SBU and the Ukrainian Navy carried out the attack
According to the Interfax-Ukraine agency, citing sources in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), it was the SBU together with the Ukrainian Navy that carried out a special operation overnight from Friday to Saturday, as a result of which the tanker was damaged. The action was carried out in Ukrainian territorial waters with the help of a sea drone filled with 450 kg of TNT, the agency wrote.
Any explosion related to Russian ships or the Crimean bridge “is a completely logical and effective step against the enemy,” Vasyl Maluk, head of the SBU, said on Saturday morning on the service’s Telegram channel. “Moreover, such special operations are carried out in the territorial waters of Ukraine and are completely legal,” he added. If the Russians want the explosions to stop, “they must take advantage of the only option: to leave Ukraine’s territorial waters and our land,” the head of the SBU said. “And the sooner they do it, the better it will be for them. Because we will defeat the enemy one hundred percent in this war” – he announced.
It was emphasized that Maluk referred to “recent drone attacks on Russian ships”, without referring to any specific event.
