Russia. Flood wave on the Ural River. Residents of Orenburg ordered to evacuate due to flooding

Floods in Russia are asking residents of subsequent towns to leave their homes. On Wednesday, the culmination of the wave on the Ural River is expected to pass through Orenburg, where flood waters have so far flooded at least 2,900 residential buildings. It is also dangerous in Kazakhstan – over 96,000 people had to be evacuated there.

“The water level in the Ural River in Orenburg has reached 931 cm. I appeal for vigilance and quick evacuation from flooded areas,” the head of the regional government, Denis Pasler, announced on Telegram.

On Wednesday, the Russian news agency TASS reported that almost 8,000 residents had been evacuated in Orenburg. The flood inundated at least 2,900 residential buildings. On Tuesday, the governor of the Orenburg Oblast in Russia, located on the border with Kazakhstan, called on the city's residents to evacuate.

In the Russian town of Kurgan nad ToboĊ‚, residents were ordered to leave their homes immediately using alarm sirens. Several nearby villages were also evacuated. An alarm was also sounded in Tyumen on the Tura River in western Siberia, a region rich in oil deposits.

On Wednesday, the Kazakh government announced that more than 96,000 people had been evacuated due to floods that have inundated swathes of the country. The areas most affected by the disaster were the northern areas, most of which border on Russia. President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev previously estimated that losses caused by water are probably the largest in 80 years.

A dam on the Ural River burst

On April 5, a dam on the Ural River – the third largest in Europe – burst in Orsk. Wide areas were flooded. According to local authorities, Orsk has already passed the peak of the flood wave, but the water level in Orenburg, located further west, has a population of 550,000. inhabitants.

The Ural River, whose sources lie in the mountains of the same name, overflowed its banks along its entire length of 2,400 km. The water level continues to rise, although it dropped in Orsk on Sunday morning. In Orenburg, located in the Urals, the peak of the wave is expected to occur on Wednesday.
