Hospital boards in Russia order employees to give up Apple equipment and use Russian or Chinese devices instead, the Moscow Times reported on Friday.

Restrictions may apply not so much to the equipment of specific brands as to their functions: for example, in the Almazov Center in St. Petersburg, staff are forbidden to use GPS and Bluetooth – unless they are installed on “approved” devices.

Russian authorities ban iPhones

Similar bans have been introduced by various institutions for several months. In March, employees of the Presidential Administration (Office) were banned from using iPhones.

Russian authorities believe that gadgets of the American company Apple are more susceptible to hacking by Western intelligence agencies. Officials are advised to switch to smartphones with the Android operating system, their Chinese counterparts or the Russian Aurora operating system.
