A Russian court sentenced journalist Mikhail Afanasyev to five and a half years in a penal colony. According to the media, the reason for initiating proceedings against the publicist was the publication about 11 soldiers of the Russian National Guard who were dismissed from service for refusing to participate in the war in Ukraine.

Court in Russia sentenced the editor-in-chief of a local publication from the Khakassia region, Mikhail Afanasyev, to five and a half years in a penal colony for “false information” about the Russian army.

Afanasyev, editor of the Novy Fokus magazine, has been in detention since spring 2022, when a criminal case was opened against him.

According to the media, the reason for initiating the proceedings was the publication about 11 soldiers of the Russian National Guard who were dismissed from service for refusing to participate in war in Ukraine.

The EU Representation in Russia assessed that the accusation of spreading “false information” about Russian aggression was against Ukraine directed at a journalist is absurd. It also stressed that this was a blatant restriction of media freedom and assured that the EU supported Russian independent media.
