Kazakhstan and Russia have agreed on the route of a future gas pipeline that will handle supplies between the two countries, Kazakhstan’s energy minister said on Tuesday. The investment is also intended to increase gas transmission to China.

Reuters pointed out that a new gas pipeline would help Russia increase the sales of its raw materials to Asia, while ensuring Kazakhstan deliveries to various regions of the country.

– The issue of building a gas pipeline from Russia through the northern territories of Kazakhstan to China is being discussed, the route has been predetermined, the conditions for the construction of this gas pipeline are being discussed, said Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy Almasadam Satkaliyev. He did not provide any more details.

It was recalled that Russia is discussing a possible gas union with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Russian gas in China

Due to the invasion of Ukraine Russia has lost its most important gas market, the European Union. Pipeline exports to the Old Continent, which used to be the main market for supplies from Russia, fell by nearly half last year. To compensate, Moscow is strengthening trade ties with Asia.

Russia is seeking to increase exports of natural gas to China. Moscow is in talks with Beijing on the construction of the second branch of the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, with a capacity of 50 billion cubic meters per year. This is more or less the capacity of the disused Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline leading to Germany.

Currently, Russia supplies China with only one Power of Siberia thread, which is to reach its full capacity of 38 bcm per year by 2025.
