The independent Russian portal Mediazona reported that the number of prisoners in Russian penal colonies fell by 17,000 in 2022. Neither the mercenary Wagner Group nor the Russian defense ministry reported how many convicts were sent to fight in Ukraine.

Russian prison services have not updated data on the number of prisoners since January, which would allow to assess the scale of their recruitment for the war, emphasizes the independent Russian portal Mediazona.

However, journalists found information on the websites of 35 regional departments of prison services. According to these figures, by the beginning of 2023, the number of inmates in penal colonies in these areas has decreased by 17,000.

The decrease in the number of prisoners may be related to recruitment for war

Mediazona suggests that the decrease in the number of prisoners may be related to recruitment for war. He adds that the largest number of people could have been recruited in the Samara, Chelyabinsk, Kirov and Tatarstan oblasts. However, the portal points out that this version is not always confirmed by statistical data. In Krasnodar Krai and in the Yaroslavl region, where active recruitment was carried out, the number of prisoners, according to official data, almost did not change during the year.

Information that prisoners in Russia are recruited to fight against Ukraineappeared last summer. According to the non-governmental organization Sitting Ruthenia, about 50,000 people were recruited for the winter, reminds the Meduza portal.
