At least 11 miners were killed and more than 40 were injured in a mine in the Kemer region of Russia. Emergency services are trying to reach 48 workers trapped underground.
Referring to the reports of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the TASS agency said that the mine was smoked on Thursday morning. Its cause – according to preliminary findings – was the ignition of coal dust.
There were 285 miners underground then, 239 of them were evacuated.
Rescue services are trying to reach 48 miners trapped underground, but the action is hindered by thick smoke.
The owner of the mine is the SDS-Ugol holding, one of the three largest coal producers in Russia.
