The US Navy destroyer Chafee, which is in the Sea of Japan, made an attempt to cross the Russian border, but the Russian unit Admiral Tribuc prevented it, the Russian Ministry of Defense said. The US military believes this statement is false.
“The American destroyer Chafee approached the territorial waters of Russia in the morning of Moscow time. Admiral Tribuc warned that such actions were unacceptable, but the American destroyer began preparations for the launch of the on-board helicopter, and then tried to breach the border” – said the Russian Defense Ministry.
There was an attempt to cross the Russian border in the Bay of Peter the Great.
“Admiral Tribuc, acting within the framework of international rules of navigation, chose a course to push the intruder away from Russian territorial waters.” The US ship, convinced of the determination of the crew of the Russian unit, changed direction and chose the return course, the Russian ministry said.
The position of the American military
The US military said in turn that the missile destroyer Chafee was “conducting routine operations in international waters in the Sea of Japan when the Russian destroyer was within 65 yards (60 meters) of the American ship, but that all interactions were safe and professional.”
“The statement by the Russian Ministry of Defense about the interaction between our two navy ships is false,” the US military statement reads. “At all times, USS Chafee conducted operations in accordance with international law and customs,” he added.
The incident at the Bay of Peter the Great. The US ship tried to invade the Russian border
A similar incident occurred in November 2020. Then, during a cruise on the Sea of Japan, the American missile destroyer USS John S. McCain entered the basin near Peter the Great Bay, considered by Russia to be its own territorial waters, to confirm its international status, as reported by the American side.
