Russia. Moscow. US citizen arrested on suspicion of espionage, Reuters reported

USSR-born US citizen Gene Spector has been detained on suspicion of espionage, Reuters reported on Thursday. The man had previously been convicted in Russia in connection with a corruption case.

Official Russian media did not give details about the suspicions against US citizen Gene Spector, Reuters reported. The court hearing was held behind closed doors and the criminal case materials are kept secret.

Media in Moscow, cited by Reuters, reported that Soviet-born Spector was sentenced in 2022 to 3.5 years in prison for his involvement in a corruption case.

The deputy prime minister’s assistant was supposed to accept bribes through his intermediation Russia Arkady Dvorkowicz, who held this office in 2012-2018. The independent portal Meduza reported that the woman was sentenced in 2023 to 12 years in prison.

The US ambassador visited journalist Evan Gershkovich imprisoned in Russia

On Monday US Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy met with Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich imprisoned in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison. This is her third visit to prison since the journalist was arrested in March.

Gershkovich, 31, the son of emigrants from the USSR, was detained in Yekaterinburg at the end of March on suspicion of espionage, although no evidence has been presented so far. Both he and his employer, as well as the US administration, deny these allegations.
