An explosion has occurred at Gazpromneft's Omsk refinery in Siberia, independent Russian media and Telegram channels have reported. It is one of the largest such facilities in Russia, with a production capacity of more than 20 million tons of oil per year.
One of the oil processing plants, AVT-11, went up in flames. The fire area reached one thousand square meters, wrote the independent Russian-language website The Moscow Times.
Omsk residents reported that the explosion was heard in several areas of the city, and its force was so great that “houses shook,” Baza's Telegram channel reported. As a result of the incident, two plant workers were reportedly injured.
The Omsk refinery, owned by Gazpromneft, a subsidiary of the concern Gazpromis one of the largest in Russia and provides one tenth of the country's total production. Its production capacity is over 20 million tons of oil per year, and the number of employees exceeds 3.5 thousand, wrote The Moscow Times.
Since the beginning of this year, Russian refineries and oil storage facilities have been attacked by Ukrainian drones at least 40 times. Many refineries were forced to suspend production after fires and equipment damage, The Moscow Times recalled.
