Residents are being evacuated in Russia's Orenburg Oblast in the southern Urals, where a dam burst on Friday. Four thousand suburban houses, home to about 10,000 people, are at risk of flooding, Reuters reported.

A state of emergency has been declared in the Orenburg Oblast, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said.

The mayor of Orenburg, Sergei Salmin, said the situation was “critical” and residents of riverside properties should evacuate immediately. He said that 300 houses had already been flooded.

A dam burst in the city of Orsk, 276 kilometers east of Orenburg.

Reuters emphasized that the entire region, as well as parts of neighboring Kazakhstan, have recently been hit by floods.
